About the Artist
Clare Samani is currently a senior at California State University Long Beach pursuing a degree in print making with the school’s art program. Once she graduates this year, she plans to head to Louisiana for graduate school. She has always drawn as a kid and grew up around her dad drawing. As a child Clare would often paint and draw because it was easily accessible and needed no direction. A few years ago she picked up print making and has now been doing it ever since. For this exhibition, she decided to focus on fashion after being intrigued by it and the way people use it as a form of personal expression.
All of the pieces within Samani’s exhibit have a similar layout. All are prints on the same size piece of paper. The style of each piece is the same throughout but the difference is the color and type of clothing. Many of them also have different patterns in the background or fore ground.
Samani’s work explores the ideas that fashion have always been a sense of expression for humans. She specifically based each piece off of a person she knows and created it based on the style and colors they wear. As she said in her artist statement, fashion becomes an exploration into the self representation and personal identity. Her work also narrows in on pattern design and american fashion trends.
I was immediately attracted to this exhibit and the work of Clare Samani. I’ve always been into fashion and personal style. I actually recently switched my major to fashion merchandising so I was very excited by this art. The colors, styles, and patterns are all exactly my style. I thought it was really cool how Clare said she based each piece off of someone she knew and their own personal style. Fashion is a really fascinating thing. that allows us to be artistic in our own individual ways. Even though there are certain trends throughout fashion, each person can take that and make it their own. For example, if summer dresses are popular, not everyone is going to look the same with that article of clothing. You can add so many different aspects with different pieces to make your own style that perfectly expresses you. Overall, I absolutely loved this exhibit and everything about it.
